WordPress vs Shopify for Australian Small Businesses: How to Choose the Right Platform

Both platforms can build a great online store. but they suit different businesses. Here is how we help clients choose — and how to switch if they outgrow their current platform.

If you are choosing between WordPress (with WooCommerce) and Shopify for your Australian small business, the honest answer is that both can work — but they suit very different businesses. Here is how we help clients decide.

When Shopify wins

Shopify is the right choice when you want to launch fast, you sell physical products, and you do not want to touch code. It handles inventory, payments, shipping labels, and tax out of the box. in a single dashboard. For a new product business that wants to be selling in two weeks, Shopify is hard to beat.

The trade-off: you are renting. your store. Monthly fees, transaction fees, and limited control over the checkout experience, the customer data, and the design. If Shopify changes a policy or raises a price, you adapt or leave.

When WordPress (WooCommerce) wins

WordPress with WooCommerce is the right choice when you want full control — over content, design, customer data, and ongoing costs. There is no monthly platform fee, no transaction fees beyond your payment processor, and you own the site outright. For content-heavy businesses (blogs, resources, SEO-driven landing pages) it is also far stronger, because WordPress is a content management system first and a store second.

The trade-off: you are responsible for hosting, security, updates, and backups. That is real work — but it is work you control, and it is work we handle for our clients through managed hosting and our Sentinel security scanner.

How the right choice depends on catalogue size and team

A business with 5 products and no in-house technical skill should almost always start on Shopify. A business with 50+ products, a content marketing strategy, and someone who can manage a WordPress site will almost always do better on WooCommerce. In between, it depends on how much you value ownership and control versus speed and simplicity.

Migration path if you outgrow your current platform

One of the most common projects we do is migrating a business from Shopify to WooCommerce (when they outgrow Shopify's limits) or from a basic WordPress site to Shopify (when they pivot to pure e-commerce). Both are doable, and neither has to mean starting from scratch. Your product data, customer data, and order history can all come across.

Not sure which way to go? Book a strategy call and we will map it out against your actual catalogue and team.
